How we use The Lord of the Rings to teach spelling:

Last week we had some friends over for lunch after church. Evelyn was making name cards for the place settings, when she looked up and asked, "Mom, how does Mr. Sean spell his name?"

I paused, then answered, "Like the actor who plays Boromir."

She didn't even flinch, just wrote it out.
